Copy Guidelines
Follow these essential text rules to reduce, or avoid, creative rejections:
General Copy Do's
Follow Brand Guidelines: Write copy that aligns directly with Weedmaps’ Brand Book and Voice and Tone guidelines.
BOGO Pricing Specificity: When promoting any "Buy One, Get One" (BOGO) deal or free items, the offer text must explicitly state that the second item is available "for $.01" (e.g., "Buy One, Get One for $.01").
Only applicable if state regulations permit.
Include State Disclaimers: Ensure your company's logo and any mandatory state or province disclaimers are clear and legally compliant.
Designer Automation: Note that standard disclaimers are automatically added by your Creative designer, but you still remain responsible for ensuring ad copy satisfies applicable laws.
General Copy Don'ts
No All-Caps: Avoid using all-caps text in your copy, as it drastically reduces scannability and hurts visual appeal.
No Pure White Backgrounds: Do not use a pure white background (#FFFFFF). Pure white elements blend directly into the platform page layout, making your ad fail to stand out.
Vape Policy and Suggested Alternatives
Due to app store guidelines and platform requirements, explicit images or mentions of vape products are prohibited. To avoid creative rejections, we’d suggest adhering to the recommended vocabulary and imagery guidelines below:
Recommended Terms
Flagged Terms (Not Recommended) | Suggested Alternatives |
Vape / Vapes / Vape Pen | Disposable / AIO (All-In-One) |
Cartridge / Cart / Carts | Thread / 510 / Tank / Disposable |
Pod / Pods | Unit / Device |
Battery / Batteries | Hardware / Hardware System / Device |
Pen / Pens | Disposable / AIO (All-In-One) |
Imagery Rules
Prohibited: Banners featuring pictures of physical vape pens, cartridges, carts, pods, batteries, or pens will be rejected immediately.
The Packaging Exception: You CAN feature high-quality imagery of your product packaging, provided that the physical cartridge, cart, pod, or hardware itself is not visible in the creative.

How to Use the Template Overlays & Dynamic Breakpoints
The Mobile-First Rule of Thumb
Before diving into the setup steps, keep this critical insight in mind: Mobile is where your customers are. The vast majority of Weedmaps consumers browse exclusively on mobile devices. To maximize your campaign's performance, always prioritize and optimize your layouts for mobile and tablet views.
No Zooming: Users cannot pinch-to-zoom on ad banners within the mobile app. Keep your text and imagery clear, bold, and easy to read from a distance.
Safe Zones: Any critical text, logos, or product imagery that bleeds outside the designated safe zones will be cut off on smaller screens. Always center your high-value information within the layout borders.
Step-by-Step Guide to Using Overlays
Download the Right Overlay Template Select and download the template overlay, linked on the bottom of this article, that matches your chosen ad placement type. To ensure crisp display quality on high-resolution screens, always design at double-resolution (2x) using the specific dimensions below step 4.
Open Your Photo Editing Platform
Import your creative asset draft along with the downloaded template overlay file into your preferred external design software (such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, or Figma).
Position Your Template Overlay
Place the template overlay as your topmost layer directly above your creative design. We’ve already made these templates semi-transparent for you, so you can see your underlying banner draft peeking through right away without needing to adjust any opacity settings!
Scale and Align Your Design
Check where your text, logos, and product graphics sit relative to the overlay guides. Scale and move your creative elements to guarantee everything vital sits comfortably within the mobile and tablet safe zone lines to prevent accidental cropping.
